The blade is signed by Fujiwara Yukinaga (藤原行長), who belonged to a prestigious school named Takada. Fujiwara Yukinaga was active during the Kan-Ei / Seiho era (1624-1647: Early Edo period). The Takada school was founded in Takada village, Bungo domain, Ohita prefecture, Japan. You can see more about the school and a certifies example of Fujiwara Yukinaga’s mei (signature) here; you will see it is the exact same as the mei on the wakizashi for sale here with us. The sword blade is in quite high polish with good hada (forging grain) and hamon (hardened / tempered zone along the cutting edge). It does a small number of non-fatal nicks too, but for a blade that is 400 years old, surely they can be forgiven!

The superb 20 5/8 inch blade with distinct hada and hamon is in good polish but has a few non-fatal nicks. The same (rayskin) layer of the grip has shrunk through age and dryness to expoae its edges on one side of the grip, a slit break the other; otherwise, everything is pretty good (the saya/scabbard has age and the kozuka small knife is absent). The wakizashi sheathes and draws well.
Very, very nice example for the low price of was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference AH53. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1819-85x14x12 (1.256)
