Etched at the forte / ricasso to high quality military accoutrement maker (Joseph) “Jennens & Co, No 316 Oxford Street, London”. These “gothic” brass hilts were all about stunning looks over protection (they were very weak) and this one has been well repaired in the past (some gilt metal paint would hide this). The brass (rather than steel or leather and steel / brass) scabbard shows this sword was for a senior infantry officer, just below general rank.
The 32 1/2 inch well tablet etched blade is in very good condition, a couple of small nicks, firm in the grip / hilt. The hilt / guard with good amounts of original gilt remaining has some repair to the weakest part (the cypher) but is very good otherwise; the folding section still good. The fishskin grip and associated twisted grip wire bindings are both very good for its age (around 200 years old). The brass scabbard has age (tarnish – will easily clean bright if desired) and a few very small dings, but is very good and has one original hanging strap still attached. The sword sheathes and draws well.
A great looking scarce sword in way above average condition. Well worth the £1200 price tag. Please quote item reference AH24. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1677-103x15x14 (1.848).
