This is a guaranteed authentic French An XIII Light Cavalry Trooper’s Sabre, not one of the many reproductions. This An XIII is unusual in that it is one of the very few manufactured in France after 1815; it was made by the French state arms factory in Chatellerault in August 1837. I do not know why the French continued to make this then obsolete sword model long after Napoleon’s defeat at Waterloo, but they did; maybe for certain ceremonial occasions.
You can not distinguish this An XIII from those at Waterloo, except for the markings. If this sword had Napoleonic markings, it would sell for exactly double the price, for the exact same sword. Less scrupulous dealers would file the date inscription off and sell it for much more.
The 34 9/16 inch blade is in very good condition and firm in the hilt / grip. Heavy brass three bar guard in very good aged condition. Original leather grip with wear / age is nonetheless good; the two brass grip “olives” are present and correct. The heavy steel scabbard with age / patina is good. The sword sheathes and draws well but sticks tight when fully sheathed.
