No maker’s or retailer’s name etched to the blade’s ricasso, so a quality maker grey / gray sword that has been sold through a small retailer / outfitter who did not warrant or pay for a retailer’s etching plate. Circa 1870 to 1880.
The 32 1/2 inch supremely well grey / gray etched blade has some spotty patina patches, but mostly away from the main etched detail. Blade with Victorian royal VR cypher and “Rifles” is firm in the steel hilt and grip. The fishskin grip with some fading but good; the associated twisted grip wire bindings are good. Steel scabbard with age and small dings, but good. The sword sheathes and draws well.
Very high quality example at nice very reasonable price. Yours for was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference AH10. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box n/a
