The 1803 pattern British infantry sabre / saber / sword is the one generally carried by infantry regiment officers throughout the Napoleonic Wars, including the Battle of Waterloo. This one has a 29 inch blade indicating it was owned and carried by a flank officer. Blade etched along the spine to Runkel of Solingen; considered by most officers to be the very best available, their blades often mounted by British cutlers. The later is the case with this sword, as the scabbard locket engraving attests; “R. Johnston late Bland & Foster Sword Cutler & Belt Maker to his Majesty 68 St James’s Strt London”. So the original officer owner was likely very well appointed.
The 29 inch blade is in worn but good though aged condition, some nicks to the cutting edge, probably period. The sword is firm in the grip / hilt. The fishskin grip in good condition but with wear, a smallish “moth” hole and a slight dent one side; the associated twisted grip wire bindings are good. The brass and leather scabbard is aged, worn and the leather has split / come apart near the chape / drag (it may be possible to disguise, rather than repair this, for display purposes). The sword sheathes and draws well.
