Dated 1798 and with owner’s / officer’s initials (J. G.), diligent research may be able to identify the original officer. Leather (not fishskin) grip for field service. With period sharpened blade and several period nicks to the forward cutting edge, odds are that this saber has seen action!
The curved 32 1/4 inch blade is etched with classical figures, laurel wreaths, urns, a cavalry officer, Britannia, stands of arms, pre-1801 Royal Coat of arms, crowned GR cypher, maker’s panel for Osborn 1798 and owner’s initials “J G”, in good condition, some patina spots, period nicks to forward cutting edge, firm in grip. Some very slight movement to steel stirrup hilted guard, one langet broken, otherwise in good condition. The original leather grip is in very good condition, as are the twisted grip wire white metal bindings. The steel scabbard with dents, dings and patina has both suspension rings missing but it otherwise fair / good. The sabre sheathes and draws quite loosely, a sign that the inner wooden slat liners are gone.
Truly lovely Napoleonic Wars example and a truly low price; was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference AG93. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1582-Golf (2.258)
