The Lion’s face, brass grip and propeller / paddle steamer wheel guard speak of the Bombay Marine. Although 1800’s British naval dirks varied enormously, the lion’s face is generally accepted as having been most favoured by naval officers of the Bombay Marine (the British East India Company’s navy).
The 11 inch blade has lost its etching and has several small areas of black patina / pitting plus has a nick on one cutting edge but is overall good and firm in the hilt. The hilt and brass grip are aged but in good condition. The leather and brass scabbard has lost its two suspension rings and the leather is aged and creased but is all still sound. The dirk sheathes and draws well.
Lovely looking example. Well worth was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference AG65. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1511-71x11x11 (0.478).
