Etched to Gieve, Matthews and Seagrove Ltd. which means 1907 to 1911 and the dirk actually made by Wilkinson Sword for them. The original owner’s / officer’s initials “H. C. T.” on the scabbard’s top fitting may well enable the officer to be identified with careful research of the Navy List for that period.
The 17 3/4 inch blade is overall in very good condition, the etching still clear, firm in the hilt. The hilt generally good, some age and wear. The fishskin grip with some age and a little grubby (small spots / patches) in places but overall gooid. The twisted grip wire bindings are good. The sword / dirk knot is presumed original and very good. The leather and brass fittings scabbard is generally good but has a kink. The dirk sheathes and draws well, the locking mechanism works well.
Well above average condition for a fine dirk and with research potential for was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference AG55. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1487-71x11x11 (0.998).
