Faintly marked inside the hilt “7DG” for 7th Dragoon Guards (scabbard correct but a replacement), these true bowl guard Maltese Cross swords should not be confused with the later and very common 1882/85/90 patterns; the 1864p is a highly prized and rare sword. The 1864P is identified by a true bowl (no edge ridge), double sword knot slits to the front, and steel scabbard with in line (not opposed) suspension rings.
The 35 1/2 inch blade in very good condition, some light pitting freckles, and firm in the hilt. The chemically browned hilt in very good condition. Composite grip good but with some age and wear. Sword knot a recent addition. Steel scabbard with some light pitting is very good. The sword sheathes and draws well.
Rare and well above average, this sword will only appreciate. Should be priced higher but is only was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference AG31. Box 1387-123x15x14 (2.565).
