Blade engraved “Presented by Ensign Shirley” over “SERGT MAJOR – C. FAIR 2ND W.Y. RIFLES”, this is clearly a shooting competition prize sword. Made scarce by having etching for the Hallamshire Rifles and retaining its leather hilt insert. No maker’s / retailer’s name.
The 32 1/4 inch blade has patina patches but etching clear and in generally good condition, and firm in the hilt. The hilt / guard with some wear, probably rust removing abrasion, but sound / good. The leather guard / hilt insert, incredibly, original and in good condition (so few survived the test of time). The fishskin grip and associated grip wire bindings are good. The steel scabbard with age, tarnish and patina is still good. The sword sheathes and draws a little loosely but well enough.
