Etched to the blade “Presented by C. Company P.W.O. 12th Middlesex to Capt. H.D. Lewis, Mar. 9th 1899”; the “Prince of Wales’s Own 12th Middlesex” refers to the 12th Middlesex (Civil Service) Rifle Volunteer Corps, which was a unit that existed from 1880 and was the predecessor to the Prince of Wales’s Own Civil Service Rifles. The regiment saw action in the Boer War and WW1.
H. D. Lewis achieved the rank of Major within the regiment and served in WW1
This sword has a fullered “dumbbell” an 1895 pattern hilt with no turned down edge.
Rare regimental Prince of Wales feathers, Victorian royal cypher and presentation text etched to blade, but no maker’s or retailer’s details. The blade is virtually as new, having been protected by the steel scabbard from damp / moisture.
The 32 5/8 inch supremely well etched quality London Made blade is in superb, virtually as new condition and firm in the hilt. The steel (not plated) hilt / guard has a speckled inert rust pitting throughout but is otherwise good. The black fishskin grip has shurnk a little through age / dryness and been later glued down just under the pommel. The silver metal twisted grip wire bindings are good. The steel scabbard has age, freckling mostlyy, but remains good. The sword sheathes and draws well.
