The original maker / retailer details to the blade now hidden by wear and patina. This 1845 pattern with a fullered blade and folding guard section. Replaced by the 1854P (same sword but solid guard), this sword may well have seen active service in the Crimean War.
The 31 5/8 inch blade has been shortened slightly (would have originally been 32 inches long) and the point rounded (this was common to make swords safe when retiring if children around), with a steady patina; firm in the hilt. The brass hilt / guard a little distorted (common, as brass looks great but isn’t very strong), the folding guard section especially. Fishskin grip with pronounced wear / gaps one side; the twisted grip wire bindings are good. The leather and brass fittings scabbard is aged / worn / scuffed etc. but very good for its 150+ year old age. The sword sheathes and draws a little tightly.
Nice sword, great price; £275. Please quote item reference ZW71. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 2176 101 x 13 x 13 (1.62).
