Etched to Hawkes Molesely & Co to the ricasso / forte who traded under that name until 1852. The blade is an 1845 pattern fullered (post pipe back) version. So the sword dates from 1845 to 1852. The Crimean War raged from 1854 to 1855. Etched to the blade “1st Battalion Royal Rifle Corps” who formed part of the Rifle Brigade in that war, and which saw it earn eight Victoria Crosses, more than any other regiment. This sword was very very likely to say the least to have seen very active service / action in the Crimean War.
The steel hilt / guard would probably clean up nicely IF carefully done.
The 32 inch well etched blade (protected from moisture by the scabbard) is in very good condition, some wear and tiny flecks of patina, firm in the hilt. The steel hilt / guard has age / tarnish / patina but is good. The fishskin grip has a fair amount of wear and age, with some small gaps evident around the steel back piece / strap and pommel. The twisted grip wire bindings appear to be intact but the lesser strands are not visibile in some grip turns (they may be absent or, as we suspect, pushed into the era / officer’s sweaty grime in the recesses). The steel field service scabbard has patina, age, wear, knocks, a ding, etc. but is still good for its age and history. The sword sheathes and draws well.
