Lieutenant Donald Macrae of 5th Battalion Kings Own Scottish Borderers: Lieut Macrae saw fierce fighting at Gallipoli. The regimental history notes that, ‘Macrae, though suffering a horrible wound in his stomach, refused all assistance, and managed to get back to the dressing-station unaided’. He returned home and recovered, but was recalled to the army during World War II, joining the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, where he rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel commanding 213 Civil Affairs Detachment serving in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany.
Includes thew sword, scabbard and belts of Lieutenant Donald Macrae, but not the actual photo of him.
No maker’s / retailer’s name; the etching may include the regimental name but it is too crazed to determine.
NB These sword have threaded pommel caps and it is possible to loosen and over-tighten them – fiddle at your own peril!
The etched 32 7/8 inch is crazed, worn and patinated but firm in the hilt. The plated cross hilt and pommel have small rust bubbles and wear, but are good. The black fish skin grip is good, as are the grip wire bindings (two strands, not twisted). The leather field service scabbard has faults (taped repairs and age / wear) but is sound. The leather belts are a little aged / worn, but well above average. The sword sheathes and draws well.
