Claymore blade and solid hilt (see image showing tang forming part of the grip)! Slim blade, but not one to be trifled with! Etched at the forte and embossed on the top scabbard locket to “MACKAY & CO., NAVAL OUTFITTERS, DEVONPORT”. The Royal Navy officer who once owned this was very well to do and paid way over the cost of a regular RN officer’s sword. Circa 1870.
The slender 30 inch well etched blade is in very good condition but for a few smaller patina patches; firm in the hilt. The gilt brass guard and hilt are also very good; the folding guard section works well and locates onto the scabbard’s retaining pin as it should. The rayskin grip with central solid hilt tang section is good, if a little grubby; the associated twisted grip wire bindings are good but for a couple of turns of a lesser strand. The sensational original mid Victorian era sword knot is good, albeit worn and faded a bit. The leather and brass scabbard is a little aged / worn / scuffed, but good. The sword sheathes and draws well.
A really top notch Victorian Royal Naval Officer’s Solid Hilt Claymore Bladed Sword in very good condition, just £850. Please quote item reference AJ70. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box?
