VGC = Very Good Condition. An awesome Patent Solid Hilt by Wilkinson Sword; serial number 34413 for 1896. Purchased by and worn / used by John Barclay Scriven of the 5th Lancers he later went onto to be Lieutenant Colonel of the 21st Lancers. He and this sword saw very active service during the Boer and First World Wars, almost certainly wearing it when he died in combat on September 5th, 1915; read about John Barclay Scriven here.
This sword is a collector’s dream, a Wilkinson Sword Patent Solid Hilt in VGC, the former property of a very important officer in the 5th & 21st Lancers, used this sword in battle and likely with him when he died in battle.
The 34 1/3 blade is in very good condition and firm in the hilt. The “ladder” 1821 / 1896 steel hilt / guard is in slightly aged but very good condition. The composite grip is very good but has a couple of small nicks missing. The original sword knot is grubby and aged but good. The steel scabbard a=has age, scratches, wear etc. but remains good. The sword sheathes and draws a tad loosely but well enough.
