The crowned head stamp to the blade was believed by English Royalists to depict King Charles 1st, when it is was the Trademark of Johannes Wundes of Solingen (Prussia), the blade maker. These swords are actually hunting swords used by the English gentry but were then used by the Royalist army as officer’s swords; they were also used by officers in the Royal Navy and merchant navy too. This one has a later hole drilled through the blade to mount it; an easy matter to fill it with older perhaps. Circa 1640.
The 17 7/16 inch blade is well aged, said hole, but is still good and firm in the hilt. The hilt / guard with age and wear but still quite good. The (red deer) staghorn grip is in very good condition. Scabbard long absent.
Who knows? Maybe this was used against the Parliamentarian Army of Oliver Cromwell! Yours, and the images it creates, for just £500. Please quote item reference ZU07. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box?
