Includes the S.519 journal for then Midshipman Gerald Faulkner Pain, detailing his time aboard HMS Hood. EVIII (Edward 8th) Royal Naval dirks are extremely rare because of that monarch’s very short reign and during peacetime when less arms were needed. This dirk is made even more desirable because of the fact it has full provenance; “GFP” initials engraved to the scabbard’s top locket, plus the log book for a midshipman aboard the ill-fated British Battle Cruiser HMS Hood. You can read about then Midshipman Gerald Faulkner Pain here and here. No maker’s or retailer’s details to the blade or elsewhere. King Edward 8th was the British Monarch from 20th January 1936 to 11th December 1936.
The very well etched 17 3/4 inch blade is in very good condition (some age / wear, plus small patina patches towards the point), and firm in the hilt. The hilt is very good; the scabbard locking mechanism works well. The fishskin grip and twisted grip wire bindings are both very good, with minimal age and wear. The sword knot is very good for its age. The leather and brass scabbard with a kink towards the chape is otherwise good. The dirk sheaths and draws well. The all weather carry bag has age but is good. The S.519 journal log book is very good for its age.
A superb as it is rare HMS / EVIII Midshipman’s dirk and log; a really sound and evocative investment for £875. Please quote item reference AJ40. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box?
