Guaranteed authentic. Dated 1853. Blade nd pommel inspector’s marks “A D K” for Andrew D. King, the principal U.S. Government inspector at the Ames factory, plus “J W R” for inspector James Wolfe Ripley, also to the pommel. Plus rack number “709” to both the pommel and the inside of the forward guard; the rack number shows the sword was issued to a front line cavalry regiment.
The Model 1840 Cavalry Saber (“Old Wrist-Breaker”) was by far the most common cavalry sword in the early years of the American Civil War (1861–1862). It was gradually replaced in the Union army by the Model 1860 Light Cavalry Saber, but the M1840 remained in heavy use throughout the conflict, particularly in the Confederate army.
The 35 1/2 inch blade is in very good condition (some period nicks to the cutting edge) and firm in the hilt. The brass hilt / guard is in good shape, some age / wear. The ribbed leather grip is good, some age / wear / small patches of loss, the twisted grip wire bindings are gone. Scabbard absent.
