Dated to being made by Klingenthal “9 bre” (September) 1814 to the blade’s spine, the sword has long lost its scabbard (probably in the Battle of Waterloo), evident by the rigorously cleaned blade (was likely covered in rust) which removed the once inspection marks to the forte, but luckily not the spine’s date inscription.
We know it was present during Waterloo as the blade has been spear pointed (the French field ground / converted these blades from their original hatchet to spear point just before that famous battle, this to increase their piercing ability). We know the sword did not stay in French hands after Waterloo because the grip is the original (post Waterloo grips had more turns), there are no post 1815 inspection / rei-nspection marks as there would be, and the hilt has not been changed to the m1816 (which has forward pointing edges).
The almighty 37 3/8 inch twin fullered blade is in good condition and firm in the hilt. The heavy / solid brass hilt / guard has some wear / scuffs etc but is still good. The original leather grip has lost nearly all of its twisted grip wire bindings, is worn / aged but sound. Scabbard is absent.
Come on, an authentic French Waterloo Cuirassier sword for just was £? (too late, now sold) is an absolute bargain. Please quote item reference AJ29. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 2283 118 x 13 x 13 (1.945).
