VGC = Very Good Condition.
A 1796 pattern British heavy cavalry officer’s sword and scabbard with older Scottish made blade. A period brass tablet label attached stating “Scotch Greys 1780”; likely for Scots Greys and the date of the blade or original officer. Was that officer or his son at Waterloo? The fact the hilt / guard is a 1796 pattern with an older blade in it means that it was either an existing older Scots Greys officer or, more likely, his son; the later very much raising the prospect that this sword was at Waterloo. The blade has been period sharpened and has several nicks, plus a possible very well reforged break line. So the sword has seen combat, for sure.
The 33 5/8 inch blade has a few small period nicks and some patina spots but otherwise is in very good aged / worn condition, and firm in the hilt. The magnificent ladder hilt / guard has been period chemically browned, looks superb and is accordingly in very good condition. The bespoke (to accomodate the blade) steel scabbard has also been chemically browned and is in very good condition given its age and likely history; some light pitting towards the drag, a couple of dings (small dents) elsewhere. The sword sheathes and draws well.
