VGC = Very Good Condition. A late 20C British Royal Engineer’s sword with earlier Victorian family blade bearing the Roche coat of arms (crown of rocks) with motto “Mon Dieu Est Ma Roche” (“My God is my rock”) and RE regimental emblem etched to the fine blade. Wilkinson serial number to the blade 27123 for 1886.
Wilkinson’s sales ledger shows the original sword and blade was sold to a A.B. Rouch Esq. (see bottom / last photo below); see him mentioned here. on page 71.
The exceptionally well etched 32 5/8 blade is in superb, very very good condition, firm in the hilt. The plated steel British 1897 pattern hilt with ERII royal cypher to the cartouche of the guard is in very good condition. The black faux fishskin grip and twisted grip wire bindings are both very good. The leather sword knot is a little aged but good. The leather field service scabbard has a little age but is still good. The sword sheathes and draws well.
