An authentic Ames Cabotville 1840 model “wrist breaker” with regimental rack number markings (“544”) to the pommel and guard; the former also with inspector’s stamp “J W R”. The markings to the blade’s forte are rubbed but “Cabotville 1849” and “US WD” are visible. This sword would have been in servoce and use during the US Civil War, as the sharpened blade and nicks thereof testify.
The 35 2/3 inch blade is in good condition save for the field sharpening marks and a couple of small nicks, plus is firm in the hilt. The brass hilt / guard is aged with a light brown patina and is good. The original leather bound grip has an age (drying) split one side, wear, and has lost its twisted grip wire bindings. The steel scabbard has wear and a couple of dings but is good. The saber sheathes and draws well.
