Engraved to the cross bar “C Gardner” and “6th A. & S.” for Lieutenant Caldwell Gardner 1/6th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, who was Killed In Action in the Somme on the 11th September 1916.
Sheffileld made. Replated (so etching a bit feint). The crossguard sections were engraved before his death, the KIA blade engraving posthumously.
The 32 inch blade is in very good condition but the etching is feint; blade firm in hilt (caveat: these swords, the pommel is a nut that screws on and can become loose – care must be taken when tightening not to shear the thread of the blade’s tang). Engraved steel cross guard good. Fishskin grip and associated twisted grip wire bindings are good, some wear. The leather field service is aged and worn, tatty in places, the final chape section of leather is missing, but is sound. The sword sheathes and draws well.
