Rare; basically a 1796 pattern cavalry officer’s saber but for a senior Royal Navy officer. RN version? That’s why it has a fouled ancchor etched to the shorter (than cavalry) blade. Senior naval officer? Proved by the ivory grip.
These 1796P fighting sabres were prefered by Royal Naval officers who wanted a sword to match any opponent’s cutlass.
Ivory licence number
The 27 1/4 inch blade has the remnants of blue and gilt etching, plus some pitting to the tip area, general aging / wear etc. but remains sound and firm in the hilt. The fine criss-cross ivory grip has age (yellowing) and wear but is very good for its age. Brass / gilt hilt / knucklebow aged but good. Scabbard absent.
This is a rare example, probably a RN captain’s sabre from the time of Trafalgar. was £? (too late, now sold). Please quoite item reference ZW34. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 2129 89 X 13 X 13 (1.238).
