Retrospectively etched “Major General E.H.W. Cobb, G.B. C.B.E, (LATE R.E.) 1902- 1955” (1955 being the year he retired from military service). Lieutenant-Colonel Evelyn Hey Cobb, OBE (born 15 September 1899, died 25 February 1972).
Evelyn Hay Cobb joined the Royal Engineers we understand mid to late WW1 (as a Lieutenant), but at some point transferred to Sam Browne’s Cavalry Regiment towards the very end of the war. Much is written about him but virtually nothing past a mention of his RE service. The sword is clearly mid World War One as it has no maker’s or retailer’s name etched to the forte / ricasso, when delivery speed outweighed such additional niceties.
The 32 1/2 inch etched blade has some inert small rust / patina patches, mostly around the edges, but remains in good condition and firm in the hilt. The steel hilt / guard has some crazing to the surface but is otherwise good. The fishskin grip and associated twisted grip wire bindings are both good. The clearly original leather sword knot has wear / age, so too the leather field service scabbard. The sword sheathes and draws well.
