Gendaito? An irregular hamon and unsigned, with no arsenal markings. The blade has been overly western polished, by hand, but certain Gendaito characteristics are there. The remains of the original sword knot are tied around the saya / scabbard and indicate this shin gunto was taken from a Japanese army officer, and therefore is not a mass surrender item.
The 26 3/4 inch nagasa (cutting edge section) is in good condition and firm in the hilt / tsuka. The furniture (tsuka, tsuba, etc.) are all good but the ito (thread that forms the grip) is a tad worn. The remains of the sword knot are faded / worn / frayed. The saya / scabbard is aged but good, though the lower but one fitting is loose (has split at side – if removed, it should be able to mend or even glue it and slide back into the correct position). The sword sheathes and draws well and the locking mechanism works.
A really nice example well worthy of a professional polisher’s once over / proper polish. Great deal, really! was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference ZY70. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1928 107 x 15 x 16 (2.435).
