In truth, highly regarded London based Johann Justus Runkel (1751-1808) imported the blade from Solingen and sold the blade to S Brunn, a quality sword cutler to furnish / cutle / make the sword. Marked JJ Runkel Solingen to the blade, and engraved “S BRUNN Sword Cutler to H-R-H the Price of Wales – 56 – Charing Cross London” to the scabbard’s top locket / fitting. The officer bought what was considered to be the best of the very best at the time. 1790’s.
The 32 1/4 inch blade is aged with some patina patches but is still good, the blue and gilt etching (including pre-1801 British Coat of Arms and Georgian royal cypher) still clear. Blade firm in hilt. The silver metal wire grip is in very good condition. The leather and brass fittings scabbard has a few dings to the fittings and the leather is scuffed in places and quite floppy, but good for age considering it is over 200 years old. The sword sheathes and draws well.
