Serial number 11980 for 26th September 1862 (Wilkinson’s finishing date). Sadly, the Wilkinson Sales Ledger only shows that this is a Standard Claymore and was sold to a Messers Jones & Co, a retailer. But, the word is etched with officer’s initials, A N F G, so some time researching the Army List for 1863 (always work one year ahead) may well reveal his name. The general’s sword knot is period, maybe a tad later than 1862 (he may well have been commissioned in 1862) but there is no reason to suppose it is a faux addition. So, just maybe, this sword is the bargain of the year! The basket has breaks to a small number of bars but they are old breaks and imply it was carried in action.
The 32 1/4 inch Claymore broadsword blade is in very good condition and firm in the hilt (note: the hilts do com apart to facilitate putting a cross hilt 9n its place). The basket hit with patina and some breaks is nonetheless in good shape. The scarlet hilt / guard liner is aged and a bit tatty but sound. The fishskin grip is worn but good; the twisted grip wire bindings present and good. The steel field service scabbard is aged and dented in places, again indicating a harsh active service life. The sword sheathes and draws well.
A great buy even if you don’t identify the officer / general. Just was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference AH71 . Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1840 101x18x16 (2.46).
