Sold Item Notice

This sword has the serial number 8486 for 14th September 1857. Unfortunately, the Wilkinson sales ledger only confirms the order for a Royal Artillery Patent Solid Hilt sword, it does not give the purchaser's / officer's name. However, he was a Smith, as the blade bears the same family crest and inscription "oblatum respue aurum" as this sword of Carleton Smith, and came from the same estate sale, so they were related. This blade has initials on it, but they are so worn and faded; they appear to be "EdeFCS".

The 34 5/8 inch blade has a steady patina throughout. There is a very small amount of movement of the blade in the hilt (so much for being solid). The hilt / guard is sound but aged and stained with a little deformation, not much. The grip is good but one turn of grip wire binding is gone.

A Patent Solid Hilt with research potential. Our price, £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference number W44. Further / full sized pictures available upon request.
