Victorian British 1854 Pattern Infantry Officer's
Wilkinson Sword, sold |
In good condition, a Victorian British 1854 Pattern Infantry Officer's
Wilkinson Sword, Lieutenant (becoming Lieutenant Colonel) Harry
Rich Farquhar of the 24th Regiment of Foot.

Serial number 15192 for 8th June 1867, the Wilkinson sales ledger
confirms this sword was sold to a Lieutenant H Farquhar and there
was only one H Farquhar at that time, Harry Rich Farquhar of the
24th Regiment of Foot. Harry Farquhar remained with the 24th
(South Wales Borderers) throughout his long military career
and almost certainly present at the Zulu Wars which included the
fateful, bloody Battle of Isandhlwana on the 22nd January 1879.
This sword was likely with him.

The 32 3/8 inch blade is in very good condition with a steady patina
and is firm in the hilt. The brass hilt is good but has some deformation,
probably period service wear. The fishskin grip with some wear but
good, as are the associated twisted grip wire bindings. The steel
field service scabbard has some wear and age but is good. The sword
sheathes and draws well.
Nice sword, important officer, full provenance: £? (too late,
now sold). Please quote item reference number W38 (1161). Further
/ full sized pictures available upon request.
