WW1 era British Royal Naval Officer's Sword
In good overall condition, a WW1 era British Royal Naval Officer's
Sword marked to a Devonport retailer.
The etching to the ricasso seems to be to an outfitter called Samuels
in Devonport but is too feint / rubbed to be sure. Most likely George
5th (World War One) but could be slightly earlier (Edward 7th).
The 31 1/4 inch blade is generally good but with some patina and
inert rust spots / patches. Blade firm in the hilt. The brass hilt
/ guard in good order. The fishskin grip is good but the top applied
bright white surfacing (patent) is coming off but the fishskin itself
is very good. Twisted grip wire in good order; a couple of lesser
strands slightly astray. The leather and brass scabbard has a kink
but still holding firm and otherwise aged / worn but good. The sword
sheathes and draws well. The folding guard section works well and
locates onto the scabbard pin.
A good honest example at a decent low price, just £? (too
late, now sold). Please quote item reference number V97 (1114)).
