British 1800's Figure of Eight Royal Navy
/ Naval Cutlass, sold |
In good overall condition, a British 1800's Figure of Eight Royal
Navy / Naval Cutlass.

An interesting example in that the hilt is period painted black
for rust control / prevention, and that they used a light blue primer
undercoat which is now showing through. The blade is still quite
sharp along its cutting edge (period sharpened) with some coarseness
and irregularity of line which may indicate use. Circa 1795 to 1805.

The 28 1/4 inch blade is sound to good but there is some erosion
/ wear to the tip area plus someone has made a brief attempt to
"clean" the blade with, probably, a rotary brush; fortunately
this is not deep and could either be stained or left to reacquire
patina. Blade firm in the hilt. The hilt / guard good with plenty
of period paint remaining. The iron barrel grip also good.
These 1800's cutlasses are scarce and this is an interesting example,
well worth the £? (too late, now sold)price tag. Please quote
item reference number V69 (1043). Further / full sized pictures
available upon request.
