Circa 1800 Georgian / Napoleonic British
Naval Cutlass, Sold |
A scarce circa 1800 Figure of Eight Georgian / Napoleonic British
Naval Cutlass in sound condition, guaranteed authentic.

THere are markings to the blade but these are too feint to determine.
This pattern of cutlass was made from around 1790 to 1804 when the
replacement 1804 pattern was introduced, so this cutlass was around
at the Battle of Trafalgar. These cutlasses were slowly replaced
and so remained in active service well after Trafalgar, plus they
were used for practice; they had a long and harsh service life,
which is why they are so scarce and rarely in very good condition
(be wary those that are in good condition are likely to be reproductions).
This cutlass has period nicks to the cutting edge which may be from
battle or later as a practice weapon. The tip has also been lost
or rounded; again, this may be down to combat damage or rounded
down for practice use.

The 27 3/4 inch blade is in worn condition but is sound and firm
in the hilt. The figure of eight guard / hilt is a little aged and
bent in places but actually very good for its age. The solid tubular
iron grip has wear but is good and firm.
A great and scarce cutlass. Good value at £? (too late, now
sold). Please quote item reference V35 (0992). Further / full sized
images available upon request.
