Mid 18C Samuel Harvey made Norfolk Militia
Hanger / Sword, Sold |
In aged but sound condition, a mid 18C Samuel Harvey made Norfolk
Militia hanger / sword.

Made by the renowned Birmingham maker, Samuel Harvey, with his
initials within running fox trademark. This sword is engraved to
"Norfolk M. E. B." (Norfolk Militia Eastern Battalion)
which means the engraving post dates 1757 under the Militia Act,
but the sword is an earlier model, probably 1740-1750, when the
Norfolk Militia existed but in a less regulated form. It may well
b e this was originally an earlier officer's or sergeant's sword
as it has a wire grip. Most militias post 1757 carried the 1751
pattern sword. Samuel Harvey produced swords from 1718 to 1778.

The 27 1/2 inch blade is in good condition with a steady patina
but is loose in the hilt / grip (could be rectified quite simply
with some metal shards and glue). The brass hilt is overall good
but aged / tarnished (again, easy enough to clean up but is best
left in our opinion). The wire covered grip is OK, repaired (soldered),
possibly replacement wire.
An early regimentally marked Samuel Harvey sword for just £?
(too late, now sold). Please quote item reference number U34 (0840).
