French 1855 Model Infantry Officer's Sword,
Chatellerault, Sold |
In good overall condition, a French 1855 Model Infantry Officer's
Sword.

Manufactured by Chatellerault in August 1878. The sword appears
to have period damage which makes sense as France
was involved in many conflicts at the end of the 19th Century.

30 7/16 inch blade in very good condition (couple of old / period
nicks to the cutting edge) and firm in the hilt. The hilt very good,
a couple of small stress cracks on the inside of the back piece
but which do not go all the way forward / through the hilt. Walnut
grip is good but no grip wire. Chemically browned steel scabbard
good but with a ding and a crease with small splits each end of
the split where the scabbard has been bent sideways and been straightened.
The sword sheathes and draws well.
A very good example which appears to have seen genuine active
service. An evocative investment at £? (too late, now sold).
