Victorian 1895 pattern British Infantry Officer's
Wilkinson Sword, for sale |
In good overall condition, a Victorian 1895 pattern British Infantry
Officer's Wilkinson Sword.

Serial number 33086 for 13th March 1895. The Wilkinson sales ledger
indicates it was sold to a "Flight" or "Hight"
but no mention of a regiment; you can get a copy of the sales ledger
for this sword for £10 from Royal Armouries. The hilt is marked
"steel hilt" (not plated) and has been period chemically
blackened presumably for anticipated conflict / field use. There
are several small old nicks to the forward section of the blade,
so it may have seen some action.

The 32 1/8 inch blade is in very good condition except for said
small nicks and is firm in the hilt. The steel hilt is good and
has the remains of its period chemical blackening. The grip good
but with clear wear which adds to the specter that the sword saw
battle conditions; the twisted grip wire bindings are good but a
little bent from wear / use. The remains of the sword knot and leather
field service scabbard are aged and with defects, though the scabbard
is fairly sound overall. The sword sheathes and draws well.
An iconic Boer War era sword by the most recognized name in English
sword makers, a very good buy for £400. Please quote item
reference T08. Further / full sized images available upon request.
