Sold Item Notice

Engraved ""Presented to F.S. Fletcher Esq by the Members of the Sergts Mess 1st C.B.R.F 16.10.1911" to the hilt, this sword was therefore, probably, a promotion gift to an upward enlisted NCO, as an enlisted man can not impersonate in any way an officer. Such presentation swords were quite a regular occurrence as commissioned officers had to buy their own swords, while those coming from the ranks could / would not be expected to. We have presumed "C.B.R.F.") means Cambridge Rifles (or Cambridge Reserve Force) as it is not an official designation / abbreviation.

The 32 7/8 inch grey etched blade has some patina spots / patches but is in good condition generally and firm in the hilt. The hilt is overall very good good with only tiny patina spots and not many. Grip overall very good, as are the twisted grip wire bindings. Sword knot aged but sound. Both scabbards very good overall for age. The sword sheathes and draws well. The leather carry bag aged (securing strap fell off as we photographed the sword) but overall sound.

A good sword with stacks of research potential. Nice price; £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference S92 (0716). Further / full sized images available upon request.
