M1860 US Civil War Cavalry Sabre by Horstmann
Philadelphia, Sold |
In good condition, a M1860 US Civil War Cavalry Sabre by Horstmann
of Philadelphia.

The maker / retailer name inscription to the forte, but it could
only be Horstmann of Philadelphia. Horstmann was actually an importer
and retailer who sold a very wide range of swords. The sword was
therefore made in Solingen (Prussia) like many US Civil War Swords.

The 35 1/2 inch blade is in good condition and firm in the hilt.
The hilt is good but dull from age; it has the number "7"
stamped to the back piece. The grip is good, a little worn, and
original but most of the twisted grip wire is missing. The steel
scabbard is good with a pleasing browning / patina throughout (it
may well have been period chemically browned, it is that good).
The sword sheathes and draws well.
A well above average example. Yours for £? (too late, now
sold). Please quote item reference S05 (0596). Further / full sized
pictures available upon request.
