George VI / WW2 British Royal Navy Midshipman's Dirkimage R87 1

Sold Item Notice

No maker's or retailer's details etched to blade, though a very high quality item indeed, so made by one of the better makers for sure. No name tens to mean either it was sold through a retailer (e.g. a naval outfitters) who had no etching plate made by the maker, or bought by an officer that did not want / was not prepared to pay to have a retailer's name added, or was made during WW2 when such detail took second place to urgency; we suspect the later.

The 21 1/4 inch blade is supremely well grey etched and in overall very good condition (some scuffing in the obverse blank attributation panel, some minor patina spots mostly away from the etching) and firm in the hilt. The hilt retains much gilt. The fishskin grip is very good, the twisted grip wire bindings also save for a little movement with a couple of lesser strands. The original dirk knot in good condition, as is the scabbard / sheath. The locking pin mechanism works well and the dirk sheathes and draws well.

A lovely item, well above average, just £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference R87 (0584). Further / full sized images available upon request.
