French 1822 Model Light Cavalry Trooper's
Sabre, May 1873, Sold |
In good condition, a French 1822 Model Light Cavalry Trooper's
Sabre, Chatellerault May 1873.

Clearly with an active service life. The scabbard has been painted
black but it is possibly period, so we have left it (easy enough
to remove if desired). The date inscription to the spine of the
blade is very feint, but appears to be May 1873.

The impressive 36 inch blade is worn, aged and has some pitting,
but is overall strong / sound and firm in the hilt. The hilt has
a slight crack to the small ridge lip (does not extend to the main
guard section itself), and the rear lip is bent down; these are
sure signs of a harsh service life, probably in Algeria
or Vietnam.
The leather of the grip is nicely worn but good, and the grip wire
bindings are still there and good. The heavy steel scabbard (painted
black) has a ding in it but is otherwise aged but good. The sword
sheathes and draws well.
Great example / good price: £? (too late, now sold). Please
quote item reference number R36 (0509). Further / full sized pictures
available upon request.
