French 1816 Model Heavy Cavalry (Cuirassier) Trooper's Sword, Klingenthal

Sales enquiries

This is actually a scarce model of French heavy cavalry sword. After Waterloo (the defeat of Napoleon) in 1815, the French redesigned their previous An XIII and most used the flat backed blades taken from the existing stock of An XIIIs still in French service. This one has the rounded back 1816M blade. Then, again in 1822, the French changed their heavy cavalry pattern again, and most 1816s then were taken out of service and their blades rehilted into 1822M's. So, to find a complete true 1816M is quite a find. Ironically, the blade is lightly pitted and worn, while the scabbard is in very good order. So the scabbard is either a later replacement or the sword was stored unsheathed, and the scabbard did better off in time. As a consequence of the blade's aging, only two of the original inspection marks (poinçons) are still visible (a rough area where the third no doubt was), and only the faintest of faintest remnants of the original spine inscription can still be determined. In any event, this remains a scarce sword.

The impressive and long 38 1/2 inch blade is in aged condition, but still strong / sound and firm in the hilt. The hilt in very good condition for its age, a slight bend to the guard lip, but nothing majorly detracting; complete with original single rack number (shows it was not reissued with a new blade) stamped to the backpiece of the guard. The original leather grip has some wear in areas down to the wood and twine (for the grip ridges) base. The twisted grip wire bindings have some previous cleaning gunk around them in places, but are sound. The steel scabbard is in very good condition. The sword sheathes and draws very well.

A rare chance to own an original 1816M. Yours for just £(too late, now sold - but we will divulge the original sales prices for a small fee if it helps). Further / full sized pictures available upon request. Please quote item reference number L22 (1197)
