1720-1740 Scottish Basket Hilt Broadsword,
sold |
In good condition, an early 18th Century Scottish basket hilted
broadsword, long blade with both 17th Century Passau Wolf and "Andrea
Ferara" marks.

Quite possibly for a Scottish horseman given the length of the
blade (38 1/2 inches), or a very large infantry Scotsman, the hilt
is circa 1730, the blade is earlier, mid 1600's, as is common to
find older blades in later hilts (the later hilts offered far better
protection and looked better than the earlier hilts).

The blade is lightly pitted along both sides. The point has a small
wriggle in it. The blade is firm in the hilt. The hilt with some
age / tarnish which we have left be. The sword has had a replacement
grip at some stage; it is a little skew to the pommel but looks
the part well enough.
This sword and its blade markings are typical of the Jacobean Scots
and may well have been an English battle trophy.
A great and iconic sword with an almighty blade. Further / full
sized images available upon request. Please quote item reference
