Fine 19th Century Afghan Pulwar / Pulouar
Sabre, sold |
A very fine 19th Century Afghan pulwar, complete with original
scabbard, high quality steel blade with wootz signature, sharp as
a razor, in very good condition for its age.

This is a very impressive sword, especially the blade, though the
hilt is fine and magnificent too. We had trouble determining if
the blade is of very high quality steel or very high quality steel
that has been plated; we are sure the former as can see no deterioration
of any plating as you would expect, especially along the exceptionally
sharp cutting edge. The steel shows some wootz patterning, but it
it very subtle. The blade is not thick, but certainly quite heavy
for what is there, and very strong, and particularly sharp. The
blade would command respect, we believe, even amongst Japanese nihonto
collectors.

The 29 3/4 inch blade has the remains of marks under one langet
and to the spine, and is form in the hilt. The hilt in generally
very good order, some wear, minor dents. The scabbard is aged and
worn but sound. The sabre sheathes and draws very well.
A superb example. Please quote item reference number H89 (998).
