1820P Scottish Highland Infantry Officer's
Basket Hilt Broadsword, sold
In very good condition, an exceptionally rare 1820 pattern Highland
infantry officer's basket hilt broadsword.
A very rare sword, circa 1820, made in Solingen by August &
Albert Schnitzler (hence the stamp "A & A S" on the
ricasso), a Scottish highland officer's basket hilted broadsword.
See Swords And Sword Makers of England and Scotland (Richard H.
Bezdek) page 343.
The plain 31 1/4 inch blade, marked only with the maker's initials
"A & A S", is in very good condition and firm in the
hilt. The plain steel hilt, a definite improvement on the frail
1798 pattern's brass hilt, is quite stunning in its simplicity and
brute strength, plus it is in excellent condition also. The original
grip has lost most of its leather (crumbling away) to reveal the
spiraled wooden base.
As well as being exceptionally rare (just try finding another)
it is actually a truly lovely sword, and therefore our price is
going to be very hard if not impossible to beat. Full sized / additional
photos available upon request. Please quote item reference number
