1896P British 7th Hussars Cavalry Officer's
Boer War Sword, sold |
In good condition, a Wilkinson Patent Solid Hilt Victorian British
7th Hussars officer's sword, Boer War action provenance, Lieutenant
Gerald (Timmy) Robarts.

This is an awesome sword that was used against the Boers at Leeuwkop,
east of Springs, in the Central Transvaal on the 1st April 1902,
preventing a rout of the Queen's Bays. This fearsome sword was the
property of Lieutenant Gerald (Timmy) Robarts, of the 7th Hussars;
Wilkinson serial number 37683 for the Spring of 1900; Gerald Roberts
was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the 7th Hussars on the
24th March 1900 and promoted to Lieutenant on the 29th November
the same year. The blade has been later period sharpened for field
action and bears both the badge of the 7th Hussars and the initials
of Gerald Robarts (further reading on Gerald Robarts here
and here).

The impressive 35 inch blade is well etched and has been period
sharpened along the first 2/3 of the cutting edge; this affects
the border of the etching but most sword collectors would see the
active service of this sword as a positive, not a detriment. The
blade has age, some wear and a little patina, but is overall very
good. Solid as a rock in the hilt of course. The hilt has patina
throughout, but it in good order. The special composite grip with
tang showing along one length is in very good condition. The field
service leather scabbard is clearly worn and this should add to
the attraction. In any event, the leather with steel fitting scabbard
is in good order and the sword sheathes and draws well in and out
of it.
Draw this sword and yield it, visualize the day Lieutenant Gerald
(Timmy) Robarts charged the Boers to relieve the Queen's Bays and
then you will know the amount required to buy this piece of history
was very well spent. Further / full sized images upon request. Our
item reference number is D35 (729).
