Victorian / Boer War British Royal Engineer
Officer's Sword, Sold |
In good condition, a high quality Victorian / Boer War British
Royal Engineer Officer's Sword.

This is a levee weight sword; that is, the blade is slimmer. But
the scabbard has been chemically browned and the brass hilt treated
/ bronzed for "camouflage" (not to stand out as the Boer
snipers always went for soldier carrying swords as these were officers),
so it is not a dress sword. No maker's / retailer's name etched
to the ricasso, so either bought by an officer who instructed no
name, or the retailer did not want to pay the maker to do this,
or the sword was made quickly for an officer ready to depart for
South Africa.

The 31 3/4 inch blade is impressively etched and in good condition;
some patina / light rust patches but not too much / many. Blade
firm in the hilt / guard. The hilt good with only slight wear /
service damage, the black fishskin grip and twisted grip wire grip
bindings are also good. The field service for lower ranks steel
scabbard is good (it has patina / light rust in places on top of
the chemical browning). The sword sheathes and draws well.
A lovely sword at a good price; £? (too late, now sold).
