1796 Pattern British Light Cavalry Officer's Blue & Gilt Sabre, Sold

In good condition, a 1796 Pattern British Light Cavalry Officer's Blue & Gilt Sabre, made by JJ Runkel.

This sabre has been well sharpened and has a pre-1802 British Royal Coat of Arms etched to one side of the blade. It would appear therefore the sabre was once owned by a regular (not reserve) cavalry officers during the Napoleonic Wars.

The 32 1/4 inch blade is in good condition, minimal patina, with useful amounts of blue and gilt etch remaining. The blade has a little movement in the hilt, no too much. The guard has a steady patina and a little former rust but is overall good. The leather grip is aged and with a couple of worm holes plus a tiny missing section under the pommel, but good; the twisted grip wire is also good. The officer weight steel scabbard has age (patina, former light rust, a few minor dings, one suspension ring missing) but is sound. The sword sheathes and draws a little loosely.
