Victorian Scottish Highland Infantry Officer's
Basket Hilt Sword, Sold |
In good overall condition, a mighty / well made Mid Victorian
Scottish Highland Infantry Officer's Basket Hilt Sword, circa 1865.
No etching to the blade, no maker's / retailer's name to the blade,
the proof slug / disc one of the plainest ever seen. Just the slightly
flattened bars style to go and the fact this is a real beast of
a sword; made for fighting, not for dress. Most likely an officer's
campaign sword, or possibly bought by a highland regiment for a
sargeant. Most likely 1865-1870 date wise.
The 32 1/3 inch blade is worn and with patina but in good condition
generally; the tip has suffered a tiny amount. Blade firm in hilt.
The hilt in very good order but with some age; a patina splotch
one side. The fishskin grip is good; the twisted grip wire bindings
present but with a few loose strands. The steel field use scabbard
is dinged here and there, with age but sound. The sword sheathes
and draws a little loosely but has a satisfying firm clunk when
being fully sheathed.
A monster of a sword. Well worth £? (too late, now sold).
