Mk3 Highland Piper's Dirk, 1st Tyneside Scottish, WW1 (sold)

A superb WW1 Tyneside Scottish piper's dirk, named piper, Lance Corporal Garnet Wolseley Fyfe, KIA wearing this dirk on the 1st July 1916 as he piped the 20th Service Battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers over no mans land.

It is exceptionally rare to get one of these dirks in such good condition. The dirk marked on the knife to R. G. Lawrie Glasgow & Edinburgh. The dirk, knife and fork's pommels inset with Cairngorm stones. The dirk's hilt inset with solid silver regimental badge, Complete with leather sheath and belt loop. I suspect the hilt fittings are silver too. Comes complete with WWI Tyneside Scottish sweetheart brooch which is said to be piper Garnet's wife's.

The plain 11 1/2 inch with part serrated back is in very good condition and firm in the hilt. The hilt fittings a little loose but nothing serious. The cairngorm insets good except for some minor damage to the main dirk's stone; not very noticeable and probably period. The wooden grip in overall good order. The back of the main hilt mount / ferule bearing the markings "1 T S" over a "7". The leather a little tired in places but sound and complete. A lovely dirk with provenance. The dirk is meant to have been recovered from Lance Corporal Piper Garnet Wolseley Fyfe's body and presented to his wife Rachel Fyfe. Garnet's grave is at Ovillers military cemetery, grave reference xvi.F.3. The photo below showing Lance Corporal Piper Garnet Wolseley Fyfe wearing the dirk.
